Legendary cinematographer Robert Richardson has made it clear who tops his wish list for future collaborations: Paul Thomas Anderson. The three-time Academy Award winner, known for his stunning work on films like ‘JFK,’ ‘The Aviator,’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ recently revealed that the acclaimed director already knows about his interest in working together.
In an interview with TheWrap, Richardson shared that he first met Anderson on the set of ‘Kill Bill’ years ago. According to the cinematographer, Anderson has expressed that if he ever decides not to shoot his own films, Richardson would be his choice. ‘It just hasn’t happened yet,’ Richardson admitted, but the door remains open for what could be a groundbreaking partnership between two masters of their craft.
Despite waiting for that dream project, Richardson’s schedule remains packed with exciting work. He recently wrapped production on David O. Russell’s ‘Madden,’ a football biopic starring Nicolas Cage as the iconic coach and broadcaster John Madden. Richardson compared his visual approach on this film to his earlier collaboration with Oliver Stone, using archival footage including vintage 16mm NFL specials as the foundation for the movie’s aesthetic. He also has upcoming projects lined up with Ben Affleck and Antoine Fuqua, proving his continued relevance in Hollywood’s top tier.
The cinematographer is currently being celebrated at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where the documentary ‘Robert Richardson: The White Devil’ by director Jana Hojdova had its world premiere. The intimate portrait features interviews with Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino, while also exploring the personal sacrifices that often accompany professional brilliance. Richardson remains committed to his artistic principles, confirming that any future collaboration with Tarantino will be shot on film, maintaining the traditional approach they embraced on ‘The Hateful Eight.’
