Aguascalientes has strengthened its tourism model by diversifying its services, with medical tourism emerging as a strategic pillar. Speaking at FITUR 2026, David Morán, Secretary of Social Economy and Municipal Tourism of Aguascalientes, explained that this sector has gained relevance as part of the current administration’s efforts to expand the state’s tourism profile.
Morán stated that the development of medical tourism is closely linked to the state’s geographic location, less than an hour from CDMX. This proximity allows efficient access to international markets through multiple transportation routes.

In addition, Aguascalientes benefits from direct air connections to four major U.S. cities, which has made the destination attractive to North American patients seeking specialized medical services. According to Morán, competitive pricing is one of the main advantages, as medical procedures can cost up to 40 percent less than in the United States and about 20 percent less compared to other regions in Mexico.
David Moran emphasized that medical tourism in Aguascalientes goes beyond healthcare services. The strategy integrates tourism experiences that include cultural, recreational and business activities, such as the National San Marcos Fair. As part of this approach, the municipality has promoted certification programs for hotels, physicians and hospitals to ensure quality standards.
Aguascalientes currently offers more than 16 medical specialties within its health tourism framework, including plastic surgery, bariatric procedures and hair treatments. Morán concluded that the expansion of medical tourism reflects an effort to diversify the local economy, attract investment and position the city as a reliable destination for both tourism and healthcare services.
