The President of the United States, Donald Trump, inaugurated in Washington the first meeting of his new Peace Board, an international initiative initially focused on the reconstruction and stabilization of Gaza. The project starts with an initial investment of 10 billion dollars provided by the United States, in addition to additional contributions from Gulf countries and Japan.

The ceremony, held at the Peace Institute —renamed after the president—, brought together nearly two dozen international leaders, including Argentine President Javier Milei and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, consolidating an alliance that some analysts believe could compete with the traditional role of the United Nations in conflict resolution.

What is the Peace Board promoted by Trump?

The Peace Board is a new international institution designed to intervene in strategic conflicts, starting with the reconstruction of Gaza, following two years of war that devastated the region.

The plan includes:

  • Initial funding of 10 billion dollars.
  • Additional contributions from allied countries.
  • Formation of a police force with support from Egypt and Jordan.
  • Military participation of Indonesia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Albania.

The head of the provisional administration for Gaza, Ali Shaath, publicly thanked the United States for its support and described the initiative as a key step toward regional stability.

Ceasefire and disarmament of Hamas: the central axis

The creation of the Peace Board arises after the ceasefire negotiated in October with the mediation of Qatar and Egypt. Currently, the plan enters a second phase focused on the disarmament of Hamas, an organization considered key in the escalation of the conflict following the attacks on October 7, 2023, against Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated that Israel’s security depends on eliminating weaponry in Gaza, while the Hamas group demands the end of the siege and full compliance with the ceasefire.

Trump’s warning to Iran

During the event, Trump also sent a direct message to Iran, urging its government to sign an agreement that limits its nuclear and military ambitions.

“In ten days we will know if an agreement is possible”, affirmed the president, amidst parallel negotiations related to Ukraine and other international tensions.

Competition for the UN?

One of the most discussed points is that the Peace Board could become an alternative to the UN in managing international crises. Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the United Nations, arguing that it has not lived up to its potential.

According to the statutes announced by the White House, the U.S. president will retain veto power within the Peace Council, even after leaving office. Moreover, countries that wish to continue as permanent members after the initial two-year term will need to contribute an additional billion dollars.
