Trump’s Triumphal Arch proposal heads to review in Washington

The fate of a massive 250-foot Triumphal Arch proposed by President Donald Trump will be decided next week, as the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) prepares to review the official designs submitted by his administration. The plans were made public for the first time on Friday.

In a post on Truth Social, the president described the project as “the greatest and most beautiful triumphal arch anywhere in the world,” adding that it would become a lasting landmark for residents and visitors in Washington, D.C.

The proposal, designed by Harrison Design, outlines a monumental structure reaching 250 feet in height—a symbolic reference to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. If approved, the arch would more than double the height of the nearby Lincoln Memorial, which stands at 99 feet.

According to the design mock-ups, the arch would feature a central opening approximately 110 feet tall, intended to frame views of both the Lincoln Memorial and the Arlington National Cemetery. The proposed location places the structure between these two landmarks, near the roundabout connecting Memorial Bridge and Memorial Avenue, close to the Arlington Cemetery Metro station.

The scale of the project would make it one of the largest monuments in Washington, potentially overshadowing nearby memorials and significantly altering the visual landscape of the area.

The upcoming CFA meeting will be a critical step in determining whether the project moves forward or faces revisions. In the meantime, the proposal has already sparked debate over its size, symbolism, and impact on one of the nation’s most historic corridors.
