Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro will return to the Sundance Film Festival on January 27 for a special screening of Cronos, his 1993 debut feature and the film widely regarded as launching his international career.
The screening will present Cronos in a 4K restoration by Janus Films, offering audiences a renewed look at the origins of Del Toro’s cinematic voice. The event also carries historical significance for Sundance itself, as it will be part of the festival’s final edition in Utah before its planned relocation to Boulder, Colorado.
Del Toro will take part in a post-screening Q&A, creating an opportunity for dialogue between generations of filmmakers and cinephiles, while reaffirming his long-standing connection to the festival and its independent roots.
The tribute to Cronos gains additional symbolic weight as it coincides with the filmmaker’s present moment, as Del Toro is currently navigating awards season with his recent adaptation of Frankenstein. The occasion positions Sundance as both a place of origins and reflection, celebrating a film that marked the beginning of an influential career that continues to shape contemporary cinema.
