From Madrid, within the framework of the 2026 International Tourism Fair (FITUR), the municipality of Aguascalientes presented its strategy to expand its presence in international markets, with an emphasis on medical tourism, air connectivity, and an urban offering that goes beyond the San Marcos National Fair.
Participation in the fair is part of a long-term vision to diversify the visitor profile and position Aguascalientes as a competitive year-round destination.
In an interview for El Mundo USA, David Enrique Morán Lomelí, Secretary of Tourism and Economy for the municipality of Aguascalientes, underscored that Mexico’s most important fair is only one part of the destination’s tourism identity.
“We are very excited to bring new projects to Aguascalientes.” The National San Marcos Fair has already been addressed, but Aguascalientes is much more than just our fair”, he said.

Medical tourism in Aguascalientes: key location and connectivity
One of the central pillars of the strategy presented at FITUR 2026 is health tourism in Aguascalientes, driven by its strategic geographic location and its national and international connectivity.
“We’re bringing up the topic of medical tourism because we’re a municipality that’s very well located, with excellent connections both internationally and nationally”, explained Secretary Morán Lomelí.
Aguascalientes offers direct flights to U.S. cities and key Mexican destinations, making it easy to combine certified medical care with urban tourism.
Hospital, hotel, and medical staff certification
The medical tourism project in Aguascalientes includes comprehensive service certification to ensure quality and build trust among international visitors:
- Certified hospitals
- Accredited specialist physicians
- Accredited hotels and restaurants
- Health and recovery tourism packages
“We are certifying hotels and hospitals, and we have a wide range of certified doctors; it’s well worth getting to know us”, the official emphasized.
Aguascalientes is promoting itself to North American tour operators
During the fair, the municipality seeks to engage with tour operators from the United States and Canada, with the aim of being included in new tourist routes and circuits.
“What we’re looking for at FITUR is to connect with North American tour operators so we can show them how beautiful Aguascalientes is”, said Morán Lomelí.

Digital platform for tourism and medical tourism
To facilitate access to information, the municipal government launched an official digital platform (www.ags.gob.mx) that brings together the destination’s tourism and medical offerings.
“Our mayor, Leonardo Montañez, created a website where you can find all the information, not only about tourism in Aguascalientes but also about medical tourism”, he explained.
This tool allows national and international visitors to plan their trip, compare services, and discover urban, cultural, and wellness experiences.
