On Tuesday, China reaffirmed its political and diplomatic support for Cuba in the face of U.S. threats, and pledged to provide “support and assistance” to Havana amid growing pressure from Washington, which, according to Beijing, puts regional peace and stability at risk.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press conference that Beijing is “deeply concerned” about the United States’ actions against Cuba and insists that Washington must immediately lift the blockade and economic sanctions.
China condemns U.S. sanctions and calls for lifting the blockade against Cuba
In its statement, China criticized the U.S. administration’s measures, arguing that the sanctions and blockade against Cuba violate international law and severely undermine the development and stability of the Cuban people. Beijing also urged the United States to cease any form of economic and political coercion that affects the island.
Experts and international observers have pointed out that the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba, in place for more than six decades, has had significant effects on the Cuban economy and the daily lives of its citizens.

Context of tensions: Trump’s threats and measures against Cuba
The Chinese statement comes amid a climate of tension between the United States and Cuba, intensified by recent declarations from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened to cut off energy and financial support to the Caribbean island, in the geopolitical context of Latin America.
In addition to the direct tensions, international reports indicate that the possibility of a naval blockade or additional measures against oil supplies to Cuba has been evaluated by some sectors within the U.S. administration, raising concerns in Havana and among its international allies.
China’s diplomatic support for Cuba’s sovereignty
China has repeatedly reiterated its stance of defending Cuba’s sovereignty and rights, as well as supporting its development within the framework of international law. Beijing has urged the international community to reject unilateral measures and sanctions that undermine regional stability and has expressed its willingness to continue providing assistance to Cuba within its capabilities.
Chinese support comes at a time when the island faces complex economic and political challenges, exacerbated by sanctions and blockades that have reduced its access to international resources and affected sectors such as tourism and energy.
