The French President Emmanuel Macron issued a critical message toward the United States, warning that Washington is distancing itself from its traditional allies and breaking away from international rules amid the growing fragility of the global order.
During his annual address to French ambassadors in Paris, Macron noted that global diplomacy is going thru a period of high tension and a loss of multilateral consensus.
Macron warns that powers are seeking to “divide the world among themselves”
The French president warned that the United States, Russia, and China are showing a growing “temptation to divide the world,” which weakens international cooperation mechanisms and leaves Europe vulnerable to the decisions of the major powers.
According to Macron, this scenario poses a direct risk to global stability by eroding the norms that have underpinned the international system in recent decades.
Crisis of multilateralism and warning of “neocolonial aggression”
Macron underscored that international institutions are undergoing a profound crisis of effectiveness and described the current diplomatic context as a form of “neocolonial aggression,” in which a few countries concentrate global decision-making power.
In this regard, he argued that the weakening of multilateralism affects key areas such as:
- International security
- Global trade
- Environment and climate change

Call to strengthen the European Union’s strategic autonomy
Faced with this situation, the French president urged the European Union to strengthen its political, economic, and military autonomy to avoid falling into a relationship of “vassalage” vis-à-vis the major powers.
Macron emphasized that Europe must consolidate its strategic independence, strengthen its decision-making capacity, and defend effective multilateralism capable of addressing current challenges without relying on external interests.
