South Florida Runner Sustains Serious Injuries at San Fermín Festival
A Miami Beach resident is recovering from severe injuries sustained during Spain’s famous San Fermín festival, yet remains determined to participate again next year despite being trampled by an entire herd of bulls during this year’s event.
Ander Etxanobe, a veteran participant with nearly a decade of experience running alongside the massive animals through Pamplona’s historic narrow streets, suffered a compound ankle fracture on the fourth day of the week-long celebration. The injury required him to travel more than an hour from the festival site to receive proper medical treatment.
Faith and Family Drive His Passion for the Tradition
Despite the brutal nature of his injuries, which also included significant bruising to his bicep area, Etxanobe explained that his motivation extends far beyond the thrill of the chase. For him, each run represents a spiritual journey and a connection to his cultural roots. He shared that while sprinting through those ancient streets, his thoughts turn to his relationship with God and the family members who introduced him to this centuries-old tradition.
Before his injury, Etxanobe had successfully completed four runs during this year’s festival. The San Fermín celebration attracts thousands of brave participants from around the world each year, all eager to test their courage against the charging bulls. Though this incident marks one of his most serious injuries in nine years of participation, the South Florida resident insists that a broken ankle will never break his spirit or his heart. He has already begun making plans to return to Pamplona next year to continue honoring his heritage.
