Following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the governments of the United States and Canada issued travel alerts for Mexico. The move comes after widespread violence erupted early in the day and has now spread to at least 11 states across the country.

Puerto Vallarta was the first city to report incidents. Criminal roadblocks using burning vehicles, gunfire, and widespread panic were reported in multiple areas. Highway takeovers and armed confrontations quickly drew international attention and reverberated beyond Mexico’s borders.

The wave of violence forced the suspension of flights over Jalisco’s airspace, while authorities urged residents to stay indoors and avoid federal highways due to the heightened risk, which has put thousands of lives in danger.

Authorities in both countries used social media to inform their citizens about the situation and urged them to remain patient and follow official instructions.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico joined Canada in issuing alerts about the violence affecting states such as Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Guerrero, Michoacán, and Nuevo León, advising their nationals to take precautions.

Both governments also recalled that from June 11 to July 19, the United States, Canada, and Mexico will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a major international event now overshadowed by growing security concerns.
