The United States and Colombia carried out a joint counternarcotics operation on Monday, February 9, 2026, resulting in the interception of a submarine transporting nearly 10 tons of cocaine and the arrest of its four crew members. According to the U.S. Department of State, the operation took place in international waters with the support of Colombian armed forces.
Authorities reported that the seized cocaine had an estimated street value of approximately $441 million. Following the interception, the illicit cargo was destroyed in accordance with international protocols, while the vessel was secured and the suspects were taken into custody for judicial proceedings.
In a statement published on social media platform X, the U.S. Department of State confirmed the action, noting that “Colombian security forces executed a joint operation to target this narco-submarine.” The agency emphasized that “strong partnerships deliver decisive results,” highlighting the importance of bilateral cooperation in combating transnational organized crime.
Operation Amid Sensitive Bilateral Relations
The operation comes at a sensitive moment in diplomatic relations between Washington and Bogotá. Just one week earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro paid an official visit to the United States, where he met with President Donald Trump in an effort to stabilize bilateral ties following recent political and diplomatic tensions.
Security cooperation, particularly in the fight against drug trafficking, has remained a central pillar of the relationship between both countries despite broader disagreements on policy and regional strategy. Officials from both governments reiterated their commitment to maintaining close coordination to address shared security challenges.
Part of Broader Anti-Drug Strategy
Since August 2025, the United States has intensified maritime counternarcotics operations in the Pacific and Caribbean regions under an initiative known as Operation Southern Lance. That campaign has involved a series of lethal strikes against vessels linked to drug trafficking, reportedly resulting in more than 100 deaths.
Unlike previous operations, which often ended with the destruction of vessels and loss of life, this latest joint mission concluded with the arrest of all four crew members aboard the submarine. U.S. officials stressed that taking suspects into custody allows authorities to gather valuable intelligence on trafficking routes, logistics networks, and criminal organizations operating across borders.
