A former Miami-Dade transit employee will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a judge handed down a devastating sentence for a horrific crime committed nearly two decades ago. Gregory Martin, 56, received life in prison plus an additional 60 years for the rape and attempted murder of an 18-year-old woman in July 2009.
Survivor Confronts Her Attacker With Unexpected Forgiveness
During Friday’s emotional hearing, prosecutors painted a chilling picture of the violent assault, revealing that the young victim had begged for her life and even told her attacker she was pregnant. According to prosecutors, this information had no effect on Martin whatsoever. “He is a conscienceless individual,” the prosecutor stated in court.
In a remarkable display of strength, the survivor faced Martin directly and offered words of forgiveness after 17 years of trauma. “I really don’t hate you. I actually love you because my heart is not made for that,” she told him. “My heart is made to forgive.” She also expressed solidarity with other alleged victims, saying she feels their pain deeply.
DNA Evidence Links Suspect to Multiple Cases
Authorities connected Martin to the 2009 crime through DNA evidence that matched samples collected from the case. His arrest came after a separate incident in December 2009, when he was taken into custody for the attempted murder of an ex-girlfriend, leading investigators to discover his DNA profile in the system.
More Serious Charges Await
Martin still faces trial for an even more serious case: the 2000 rape and murder of 13-year-old Cynteria Phillips, whose body was found near Miami Edison Senior High School. DNA evidence has also linked him to that tragic case. The judge has scheduled the murder trial for early 2027, noting it remains one of the oldest pending cases in the courthouse.
